When to be careful!
Manhole inspection chambers can be very deep, posing a height risk if someone falls in, with chamber step irons being the first thing hit during a fall although not all chambers have step irons. To prevent accidents while waiting for a replacement cover, place a wooden board or crate over the hole, and use road cones or rope to secure the area around the broken manhole cover.
During my visits to homes, I often find septic tanks with manhole inspection chamber covers that are meant to protect people and animals from falling in rusty, hole-filled condition, old covers are hazardous. It’s crucial to replace these covers to avoid the dangers of falling into a septic tank, which not only involves sewage but also the difficulty of rescuing a person or pet from the tank or chamber.
A recent experience…
Situation: A family arrived at their grandparents’ home and parked their motorhome on the driveway. Unfortunately, the rear wheel of the motorhome broke through the cover of a drainage chamber, causing the wheel to drop into the chamber and the vehicle to bottom out.
Response: A Tow Response Truck was called to lift the motorhome out of the chamber, incurring additional costs. The family temporarily covered the hole with wood from the garden, but over time, this led to further issues.
Outcome: Weeks later, the drains became blocked. Upon inspection, we discovered that part of the broken cover had fallen into the chamber, obstructing the flow of waste to the main sewer. We successfully cleared the blockage, restoring proper drainage, restoring full flow to the foul drain.

- Lift or remove cover if you can and measure the inside chamber walls, length and width or if it’s a round chamber the inside width.
